How to fight insomniia

A few years ago I was suffering from insomnia. To be honest I was never a heavy sleeper. On the contrary, I was always a light sleeper, waking up instantly just with the noise of a fly. But it was only when I gave birth to my second son that things got bad.

With two pregnancies back-to-back (my boys have only 15 months difference), the exhaustion hit me, and the constant waking’s of my babies at night trained my brain to not go back to sleep anymore. I was up all day all night, sometimes even for three-four days in a row. As I was breastfeeding, I did not want to take any medicine sleep aid. I had to try natural solutions to help me sleep. But how to fight insomnia?

Working with pure essential oils for years, I turned to the well-known power of aromatherapy for sleeping problems. Some of the most popular essential oils to help sleep problems are:

  • Lavender oil
  • Geranium oil
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Chamomile oil
  • Valerian oil

I tried different combinations, combining some of the above essential oils, among others, like sandalwood and Frankincense. But the scent was either too strong and heavy or too sweet and floral.

I then remembered the warm, woody, and herbal notes of Rosewood oil. Rosewood essential oil is high in Linalool (85%), which can support decreasing aggressive behavior, maintaining a normal sleep function. For thousands of years, traditional medicine has used oils that contain linalool as a way of promoting rest and maintaining sleep function.

You guessed right. Lavender !

That was my magical blend. The Aromatherapy sleep pillow mist is made of Lavender, Geranium, and Rosewood essential oils. The scent is instantly dragging you. Indulgent aroma with a warm, sweet aroma, blended with woody-rosy notes.

I started a new daily routine. Every night before going to bed I was having a banana peel tea (a natural source of magnesium), a hot bath with lavender oil, and Epsom salt (some more magnesium), and then I was spraying my sleep aid on the linen, pillow, pajamas and even a few drops in my diffuser.

It worked!

I was drifting into a deep sleep without even noticing it. Even when I had to wake up for my babies, I could go back to sleep so much easier. My mental health improved. I was waking up happier and started finding myself again. Insomnia can make you aggressive, feel sick, and depressed at the same time.

It was one more win for the power of aromatherapy. It’s not about creating something that just smells nice (e.g synthetic fragrances). It’s creating something that it’s made of pure essential oils to benefit from their natural healing power.
